Later on in 2024, he was called up to the Yankees starting rotation at 26 years old after AL Cy Young Award winner and Yankees ace pitcher Gerrit Cole suffered an injury during Spring Training. He made his Professional Debut on April 1st, 2024, vs the Arizona Diamondbacks. On May 18th, 2024, he recorded 14 strikeouts against the Chicago White Sox Breaking Orlando Hernandez's record (13) for most by a Yankee rookie. Coincidentally, Hernandez threw out the Game's First Pitch that day. Gil Received his first Pitcher of the Month Award for May 2024 after winning all six of his starts that month.

Currently Gerrit Cole is at his Minor League rehab assignment at the Double A level for the Somerset Patriots. On Tuesday, Cole went Four innings with 45 pitches, meaning he threw 34 strikes and 11 balls. He only allowed 2 hits and zero walks while striking out 5 batters.

This season, the Yankees have still had the best rotation even without Gerrit Cole. Cole is expected to return by late June to early July. But Gils performance ensures that he will play a good part in the Yankees rotation as he is still a leading candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year. His rookie eligibility is still intact. In my personal opinion, I don't think Luis Gil will be heading back to the Minors anytime soon, since his numbers this year has provided that he could be one of the next big stars and a future Cy Young Award Winner.
