August 29, 2024 , a day hockey fans will never forget... tragedy. It was just a regular Thursday night in New Jersey, nothing was planned to happen, they were just getting ready for their sisters wedding the next day. So brothers Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau decided to go on a bike ride...Then, the next day, news broke across the world of hockey, that night a drunk driver hit Johnny and Matthew on their bike ride and it killed both of them... dying at only 29 (Matthew) and 31 (Johnny).
Matthew, also known as ¨Matt¨ was Johnny´s best friend and his little brother. He played for the Worcester Railers in the ECHL and the BridgePort Islanders in the AHL. He also played college hockey at Boston College. Throughout his college career, he scored 16 goals and had 47 assists in 119 games. Matthew wasn't as well known as Johnny but he will still be missed deeply.
Johnny Gaudreau played 11 seasons in the NHL. 9 Seasons with the Calgary Flames and 2 seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was a great player in the game of hockey and was loved by many fans around the NHL. Throughout his career he received the Lady Byng Trophy and was a 7 time All-Star. Johnny also went to Boston College playing a total of 119 games, scoring 78 goals, and had 97 assists. Johnny was a star and legend in the NHL and will be missed deeply.
